What is a Search Engine?

What is a Search Engine?

A search engine is a computer program. This program is also known as algorithm or algo.

Every search engine has its own algorithm or algo.

There is an intense competition among search engine companies to develop new algorithm almost round the clock to better their search engines.

Many engineers and scientists work behind the scene.

Working of a Search Engine

The search engine interface is displayed inside a browser.

In this interface you can type your queries. In SEO technical term these queries are known as keywords.

The internet or World Wide Web (WWW) can be compared to a warehouse filled with goods from around the world.

If you are looking for a particular item like an ancient needle; you’ll need to search the entire warehouse for that particular needle which in turn would be a tedious job.

If there was an assistant in the warehouse, he or she would fetch it for you and thus saving your precious time.

In the internet world, the search engine; a computer programme does the assistant’s job, fetching the required info that you require and thus saving your time.

As an example, if you are searching for a self-driven car by Google, all you need to do is type in the sentence or phrase in the ‘search engine bar’ as shown in the image below and the search engine or the programme will fetch you the results.

How does a search engine get results of your searched keyword?
Search Engines uses a special algorithm or a procedure. It accesses all the data there is available on the internet (www).

Once your query or keyword matches your typed text with the available websites, then these website links along with their snippets are displayed in the browser.

A snippet is a small description about the website or the article it contains.

Normally, a list of about 10 websites is displayed to you; with pagination for more websites below.

A search engine may show you organic results. Organic results are those which the search engine fetches naturally.

There are also sponsored results which the advertiser pays the search engine company to show their result on top of the page.

Out of this you need to choose the best website that suits your need.

What is SERP?

The listing of the websites using special algorithm or procedure is known as SERP (Search Engine Result Pages).

These websites normally accompany images, videos and advertisements along with required information.

Are search engine and the browser the same?

Not really. A browser is a programming interface.

The search engine sits in the browser.  A browser displays the websites the search engine fetches.

It does this with the help of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and various other coding languages.

There are many popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer (IE), Opera etc.

All these browsers and search engines are free to use.

What are the major search engines in the world?

Google search engine is very popular.

Yahoo and Bing are the other two popular search engines.

Most of these search engines have their own algorithm, also known as algos.

Each search engine brings its own set of result for a particular query or keyword.

It could be a great idea to search all search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing for your specific query and compare the results with each other. It may give you the best output!

What is the best way to search in search engine?

If you want exact match for your keyword, then you need to put the keyword in quotations.

As an example; if your intention is to search for Cricket game, then you need to put it in quotations like “Cricket” else it may also show crickets (insects).

If you want information on cricket insects, then type “cricket insect” in quotes.

How to search a topic on a specific website?

You can search a particular term or item in a specific website.

For example, if you like to search for a term ‘soft skills’ on a particular website called divinelightnews then you need to do the following:

Soft skills site: divinelightnews.com

What is White Hat SEO?

White Hat SEO is an ethical way of bringing in visitors or traffic to your website.

When you design a website your main goal is to bring as many visitors or traffic to your website so that you can generate income with the help of AdSense or other means of advertisements.

While you strive to bring in visitors you need to follow some guidelines laid down by search engines like Google, Bing etc.

A good or proper way to bring visitors to your website is known as White Hat SEO as it’s pure and does not include any illegalities. It is also known as Organic SEO.

It follows all the guidelines that are laid down by various search engines  to its core.

White Hat SEO is pretty slow to rank in search engines.  It may even take months to rank higher in website competition.

You need an extensive keyword research backed by good informative content or articles to rank it higher in any search engines.

Apart from keyword research, you can promote your website or YouTube videos through various social media networks like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc.

Another technique is to insert backlinks in your website. This technique will be covered later in coming days.

However, though it is slow, it provides stable and long lasting growth to your website in future.

What is Black Hat SEO?

It is opposite of White Hat SEO.  It is unethical and does not follow any guidelines. It provides fast growth to your website.

However, the growth is very risky, unpredictable and unstable. It's the bad boy of SEO world.

Some techniques of Black Hat SEO are spamming, keyword stuffing, cloaking, hidden links and hidden texts.

The risk involved in this technique is so very high that there are chances of search engines blacklisting your website.

What is Grey Hat SEO?

It is a combination of White Hat SEO which is about 95% and Black Hat SEO which is 5%. It is used to get quick results in short period of time.

You need be pretty careful while using this technique. If the proportion of Black Hat SEO increases, then there is a chance of your website getting black listed.

You may attempt this once you get proper experience and confidence.
